Q+A with Dr. Bart

Why or how did you decide on a career in medicine?
I decided to become an ophthalmologist when I was a junior in high school. My first pair of glasses made quite an impression on me. Now that I could see my environment clearly, I felt more at ease. In my major of Human Biology at Stanford, my area of concentration was Vision and Perception. I was fascinated by the visual system and my goal was to help others improve their sight just as had been done for me. The more I learned about ophthalmology, the more I understood how well-suited I was for it and it for me. Ophthalmology requires precision and attention to detail. Complex analytical thought is a necessity. Surgery requires dexterity as well as an aptitude for 3-D mechanics. These characteristics come to me naturally. No one from my childhood was surprised when I became an ophthalmologist!

What do you find fulfilling about your work?
The most fulfilling aspect of my work is helping others see clearly, treating disease and eliminating pain. It may be an elaborate exam for an eyeglass prescription employing refined techniques many doctors don’t use. It may be performing a procedure or giving medication that stops a disease process and restores good health. Seeing both their improved vision and their resultant joy is a privilege I am honored to experience.

Anything personal you want to share about yourself?
I am married with two teenage children. I enjoy swimming, learning languages and travel.
Tell us about the culture/values of your practice.
Our practice is patient-centered. Our goal is to provide exceptional care. We work as a team to ensure that the best medicine is combined with the most favorable experience in our office.

What makes your practice different from others’?
My patients tell me I am more communicative than other doctors they have seen. I welcome questions and give thorough explanations. I invite patient participation in forming treatment plans. Most importantly, my patients choose me because I care. I get to know my patients, through which I practice better medicine.
